Park Slope

Park Slope is one of Brooklyn’s best-known and most desired neighborhoods, and for good reason. This is brownstone Brooklyn at its best, with magnificent row houses on every block and easy access to Prospect Park’s grassy lawns and well-kept playgrounds. Trees are everywhere in this neighborhood, and biking is a popular mode of transportation.
Townhouses, co-ops and condos are all plentiful, and residents are careful to maintain and care for their homes, each of which is its own architectural masterpiece. Old churches stand on several street corners and add to the grandeur of the neighborhood, their steeples interrupting the mostly low-rise skyline. The Montauk Club building in the northern part of Park Slope is a rare example of Venetian Gothic architecture dating from 1891.
Park Slope stretches north to south from Flatbush Avenue to 15th Street, and east to west from Prospect Park West to Fourth Avenue. Seventh Avenue is the commercial center of the neighborhood and provides toy stores, bookstores, and clothing stores in addition to restaurants and bars. For more of the last two, residents head to Fifth Avenue, which is well-respected for its nightlife.
There is a strong sense of community here, as evidenced by the Park Slope Food Co-op, which provides its members with healthy, organic groceries in exchange for a small monthly volunteering commitment. There is also much local support for independent businesses, which survive here despite the presence of corporate competitors. There is a farmer’s market every Saturday with fresh fish, vegetables and pastries galore, as well as flower stands and fruit stalls.
The 2/3 subway line serves Grand Army Plaza in the northern part of the Slope, and the B/Q is also accessible nearby. Farther south the F/G line is available, and the R train stops on Fourth Avenue, Park Slope’s western boundary. Manhattan is a short commute away, as is Brooklyn Heights.
