Restaurants in Kensington Brooklyn
written by Warren Lewis Realty Team
Kensington, Brooklyn is one of the few neighborhoods in New York that feel truly small. Residents of the area are extremely diversified, with sizeable ethnic groups representing five of seven continents. The diverse community makes it not only a unique community in the United States, but a good place to find authentic ethnic dining from many traditions. Restaurants in Kensington Brooklyn offer many opportunities for new cuisine experiences, from Italian to Thai to Mexican.
Pizza is a big hit with Brooklyn residents, and those in Kensington are no exception. A favorite in the area is Xpress Pizza. As the name suggests, it is a hub best enjoyed for its delivery. Loyalists to the restaurant love dining in or out, and rave about the value: great food, low price. Xpress Pizza was recently sold (2009), but according to most, the quality of the food has only improved.
If you’re not craving pizza but love a good Italian name, try Thai Tony’s. Yes, the food is Thai, and the name is Italian, but don’t be suspicious: the Thai food is delicious and “Tony” is only a nickname for a Thai equivalent which locals find challenging to pronounce. As far as authenticity is concerned, the food has no competition. First-time Thai eaters should select mild spices and be ready to enjoy, they will practically live in Thailand while they eat. One consideration: some of the locals find the menu prices to be a little steep.
For an authentic Mexican meal at low cost with friendly staff, Taqueria Los Poblanos is the best in Brooklyn (according to those who have dined in). The selection features cuisine popular in Central Mexico; the chefs, wait staff and owners are all from the area of Mexico that their food represents. Spanish soap operas play on the TV while you eat. The décor is sparse (though not for a hole in the wall place), but the appeal of eating in a restaurant that feels like your own little secret outweighs that small detail. Like many restaurants in Kensington Brooklyn, this one is at home for its perfect portrayal of the culture it represents.
